Fela Anikulapo Kuti is a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, politician, song composer, Afrobeat singer and pioneer. He gain his popularity through his Afrobeat pioneer as he serves as the first African Afrobeat pioneer alongside Tony Allen who died recently on 30th April 2020.
Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti was born on 15th of October 1938, in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State Nigeria by Protestant minister, Reverend Ransome-Kuti and a political activist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. He attended Abeokuta Grammar School in Abeokuta and was sent to London in 1958 to study medicine, but decided to study music instead at the Trinity College of Music. He started his music career from his childhood, he learned piano and drums and led his school choir. he formed the band Koola Lobitos, playing a fusion of jazz and highlife in London and went to Ghana looking for a new musical direction in 1967. He got his own music style and name it “Afrobeat” a combination of funk, highlife, jazz, salsa, calypso and traditional Nigerian Yoruba music. He took his band team to the United States and back in Nigeria in 1970 when he chooses to change their name to the Afrika ’70, he also formed the Kalakuta Republic. In 1977, Kuti and his team released the Zombie album, he chooses to use pidgin to sing as there are numerous languages in Africa and only the pidgin language will be able for him to communicate with all African tribes and just one language. He released “Coffin for Head of State” and “Unknown Soldier” after getting thrashed from the Nigerian military for his Album “Zombie” which describes the Nigeria military, The Kalakuta Republic was burned, and Fela’s studio, instruments, and master tapes were destroyed.
Fela married 28 wives, his first wife and another 27 he married the same day, he said,
“It’s very important for a man to marry many women, because a man goes for many women in the first place,”
It was announced on 2nd August 1997 by his brother, Olikoye Ransome-Kuti in a statement broadcast on national television in Lagos. No cause of death was given at the time but it was later get to know that the African Afrobeat legend died of AIDS. Over 1 million people were present at his funeral and this grant him the badge of honor as the Afrobeat genre legend.
